This smoothie is packed full of protein, antioxidants, and healthy fats. The sweet orange and apple balance out the bitter cocoa and ginger adds a spicy kick plus some digestive-boosting magic. The combo of almond butter and hemp seeds create a delicious creamy texture.

It’s on the thinner side since we aren’t adding anything frozen (kind of like a mix between a smoothie and chocolate milk). I like it best the next day after it has rested overnight in the fridge and thickened up! It’s filling enough as a meal for one or as a refreshing drink for two.

Servings 1
Prep Time 5 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 orange, peeled, halved, seeds removed
  • 1 apple, cored, quartered
  • 1 cup water
  • ¼ cup hulled hemp seeds
  • 3 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp almond butter
  • Small knob ginger
  • ¼ tsp kosher salt (a heavy pinch)

Instructions

  • Add all ingredients to a high-speed blender and blend until totally smooth.
  • Serve it up right away or let it chill in the fridge for a few hours or overnight to thicken up (my preference).

Items you can prep ahead (optional)

  • You can make this a day in advance.

Substitutions:

  • To make it nut-free, use tahini or sunflower butter.
  • Add in some frozen banana to sweeten and thicken it up.

Storage:

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Leftovers + Repurposing:

  • Give it a stir and drink up!
